Friendship Coach Workshop Series: For Parents and Guardians
Are you the parent/guardian of a teen or young adult child who struggles with relating to others and making and maintaining friendships? Does your teen or young adult child have a diagnosis such as Autism, ADHD, Anxiety, or Depression; making it difficult for them to engage socially? Would you like to learn strategies to help your child to be more socially successful? Then the Friendship Coach Workshop series may be a good fit for you and your family.
The Friendship Coach Workshop series is based on the principles of the evidence-based UCLA PEERS therapeutic program for parents/guardians and their teens/young adult children. Dr. Hussar Boyle facilitates this workshop series to introduce parents/guardians to the concepts and strategies used in the UCLA PEERS therapeutic program. Parents/guardians will learn the basics to being a social coach for their teens/young adult children, as well as have the opportunity to practice skills taught during the workshop series. This workshop series is offered for 13 weeks, addressing a new topic each week. Parents/guardians can choose to attend 1 session or all 13 sessions of this series.
The Friendship Coach Workshop series uses the book The Science of Making Friends: Helping Socially Challenged Teens and Young Adults by UCLA PEERS creator and author Dr. Elizabeth Laugeson, as its guide for the course. Series participants may find it useful to purchase this book to guide their learning and strategy implementation outside of the workshop sessions.
Please note that this educational series serves as an introduction to the UCLA PEERS program and methods for parents, please note it is not a therapeutic program/group. This educational series is not the UCLA PEERS therapeutic program and Dr. Hussar Boyle is not currently a UCLA PEERS certified clinician. The UCLA PEERS therapeutic program is an intensive evidence-based intervention that requires parent/guardian and teen/young adult child participation. Dr. Hussar Boyle plans to offer ULCA PEERS therapeutic groups in the future.
